Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, København

When in Copenhagen, you have at least to drive, bike or walk past Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, København, a piece of Gesamt Architecture designed between 1956 and 1960 by one of Danish starchitects, Arne Jacobsen. Arne also designed a lot of the Interior. Think Egg chair and Swan Chair. Unfortunately there is only one hotel room (Room 606) left in the original style. However you can opt to sleep in it if you want and if you can afford it. It is expensive!

Built as the SAS Royal Hotel, the hotel was renamed the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel in 1994, when SAS bought a share in the foreign division of Radisson hotels. When SAS sold their share in 2009, it was renamed as Radisson Blu Royal Hotel, København

When in Copenhagen, the changing of the guard around noon is a must see. One of the reasons is that it is cosy and small rather than the changing of the guard in London. There are three types of Watch, The Kings watch when the queen is resident in the Amalienborg Palace, the Lieutenant Watch when HRH The Crown Prince is serving as regent and it can also be established if either HRH Prince Joachim or HRH Princess Benedikte act as regent. The Lieutenant’s watch can also be established when HRH The Prince Consort is in residence at Christian IX’s Palace. As part of this watch, the parade marches at 11.30 from the Life Guard Barracks under the command of a captain or a first lieutenant.

The smallest type of watch is called a Palace watch and is established when no royal family members are residing at Amalienborg. When a Palace watch is established, a commanding sergeant and the guard force march from the Life Guard Barracks at 11.32.

These photo’s are from the simple Palace Watch changing, but nevertheless nice to see and where will you see a police officer hand over his police hat to a tourist to take a photo with him as in the first two photo’s?

Copenhagen – Bike City

There are systems in the city like other cities for bike rental. But you have to register, give your creditcard and God knows what else details in case you might have a plan to bomb something in the city.

Then it is simply much more fun to rent a bike at decent rates at the bike rental on the corner of Nyhavn and Havngade… It seems they rent hats as well so you don’t lose your beloved one under way…

Maria Fantino for city council of Copenhagen?

Recently I was in Copenhagen, a wonderful city, pottering around on Amagertorv on the crossing of Strøget and Højbro Plads.

Actually my camera spotted the two ladies walking around with videocams first and then my main subject of this post turned around and looked at me with with her clear blue eyes and part of her chicken outfit in her hands.

Maria Fantino seems to be a fancy name as per her Facebook account. Her real name is Maria Emilie Prehn Hansen, daughter of Jesper Lau Hansen, a Copenhage lawyer who has studied law in Camebridge (UK) as well.

Only later, after I had visited some stores in the neighbourhood I saw her again in a cage with her chicken outfit on. Only then she had my real attention while Svenne Lund Jensen was circling around her and kind of interviewed her with an IPhone. When I asked her why she was sitting in the cage she replied that she was contesting to be elected into the Copenhagen City Council. Chickens should be free walking around according to her. I commented I thought she was part of a Hen party or in the race to be married soon. She hadn’t thought of that. It is not clear whether this is real or just an assignment from her school of an assignment from Danske Radio where she seemed having been elected into a super team of 4 outsiders to try to get into the Danish radio or tv scene. 4 succeeded of 1,000 applicants. As she is not particular active on Facebook or Twitter or Google social media, I doubt it is real, but maybe she’ll see this post and comment some time in the future.
She’s probably not aware that we in the Netherlands even have a pro animals party in Parliament….

Perfect Poached Eggs

Yummy Eggs

Poached eggs with Sauce Hollandaise

and

I have to admit: I’m not good at poaching eggs.

Not long ago a friend of mine posted a photo of a perfectly poached egg on a toast on her FB Timeline and she explained some basics to me.

Today I had a bit of time and looked online for some info on the subject. I found this clear video footage by Jamie with some tricks and maybe his best trick is to pack the egg in some foil while cooking.

And see while drafting this post, a post about a Breakfast Blog pops up…..

I’ve tried it on two eggs today and I succeeded and without the foil trick. It is not difficult at all, you just need to practice. The second video also helps to understand the process a bit better and the third is for the microwave addicts.

Fresh eggs, not a lot of water in the pan, stirring is not very necessary and no vinegar to help the egg white coagulate. With a low water level a lid is helpful when the yolk sticks out of the water. Next step: Learning to make a nice Sauce Hollandaise. Yummie.

I add two links as a reminder: Eggs Benedict accoring to Simply Recipies and and easy pease written story about egg poaching.
