Dutch Group Travel Blogging initiative "Spotted by Locals" wins People Award in Mashable's Open Web Awards Travel Category

Spotted by locals has won the people’s vote at Mashable’s open Web Awards in the Travel Category. Congratulations!

What is Spotted by Locals?
Spotted By Locals is a series of cityblogs for travelers who like to experience cities ‘the local way’. On every cityblog, handpicked locals (”Spotters”) write about spots they go to.

Who’s behind Spotted by Locals?
Spotted by Locals was started by two Amsterdam locals and travel addicts, Sanne & Bart van Poll. They handpick all Spotters in all cities, only after having had a face to face meeting.

Much more important than the initiators are the Spotters! Check out who they are here.

Does the world need this?
Certainly! Paper guidebooks just can’t keep up with cities: the moment they are printed, they’re already outdated. And there are many reviews of spots in cities on the internet, but they are often difficult to find or trust.

Sanne & Bart have often experienced going to a restaurant, and seeing many people with the exact same city guide on their tables. Or going to a “hip” club or bar that had been closed for a long time already. We have seen this (too) often. And we know many travellers have the same problems.

So, yes, the world certainly needs trustworthy often updated information about places real locals visit! We will make sure you can experience cities like the locals do.

Travel Blog Camp 2008 (#tbc08 02): Photos

I’ve edited and uploaded my photos to Flickr. All in all I’m not very satisfied with the quality. I’ve certainly not shot enough (quality) as Heather from Heather on her travels suggested “to start a Travel Blogger’s society page”. Alas the light circumstances were far from ideal.. The first lesson for the next Travel Blog Camp: more light please – or should I bring more professional lighting?

The second photo is of Darren Cronian, who organized the event.

This is Matthew Cashmore of Lonely Planet, one of few who apparently tried multitasking by both listening intensely and Twittering away at the same time. I don’t know who the lady to the left of Mathew is….(added: Thanks to Matthews comment on Flickr (see below) the lady in question is his beloved Mrs Cashmore. Hi Catherine!)

I would like to ask my readers to comment on Flickr and give names and details to the faces, because here is lesson number two for the next edition:

  1. What happened with the name tags?
  2. At least it would be helpful if there is a list with thumbnail photos and names and web presences of those who attended, but Darren informed me that such could be a violation of UK privacy legislation… Can’t we ask the participants to waive this?
  3. Isn’t that what networking is about: Knowing who is who?

Travel Blog Camp 2008 (#tbc08 01)

Travel Blog Camp 2008

Just a short note with a few impressions:

Kudos for Darren for organizing it and for the speakers to get the room a bit heated up. There really were about 80 bloggers, industry reps and pr types. Location was excellent.

Roaming Tales has posted a nice summary.

I had hoped that my new Blackberry was a better instrument than it turned out to be and am probably regretting I didn’t choose for an Iphone. It was frozen during most of today. Now I have learned that the Blackberry variant of cntr alt delete is: Pull out your battery. This doesn’t necessarily means a Blackberry is a bad thing. I’m even able to freeze an Apple computer withing 5 minutes of using it.

All in all I arrived later than I anticipated and missed a speaker (Alex). But I missed a lot of what actually happened and was said anyway, because I tried to concentrate making some nice photos. Not sure how they turned out, because I rather process them at home on my own computer. So you’ll have to wait until probably Sunday when I will have some time to process them. And here, Kevin, speaks the Blogger who takes his time. A (photo) journalist would have put every effort in posting these photos today (err last night).

When after the speeches and debate I stepped outside with some fellow smokers and returned, more than 2/3rd of the people were gone already. That amazed me a bit. Haha especially Darren must have been worn out as he didn’t take me up on my offer to have another beer. Big question here: “Are the Dutch Better beer drinkers than the Brits?”

Today I took off to spend with DW. Tomorrow I will roam a bit over WTM. Anybody wanting to see me can DM me at Twitter | Happy Hotelier

Travel Blog Camp 2008

I’m looking forward to meet about 80 to 100 fellow travel bloggers and industry persons at Travel Blog Camp 2008 (Registration is closed) set up by Darren Cronian of Travelrants in a London Pub tomorrow evening.

The header of this post is a bit cryptic. It means that those in the know who are attending WTM 2008 will keep contact via Twitter on a self created Twitter “channel” that can be found when you do a Twitter Search on the #hashtag #WTM08 or #TBC08. Happy Halloween: Happy Hotelier’s 300 T-List Travel Related Blogs Ranked according to Technorati

Time to pick this up again. My last T-List Ranking Update dated back from January, 2008.

Technorati ranking as of today and yesterday
This ranking of the the T-List (Travel related Blogs) is according to the Technorati ranking as of today and yesterday. I know, a technorati ranking is not without errors and not without judgment of the Technorati people (and myself). Moreover. Not every blog is registered with Technorati. One person with a dot travel domain simply gets no technorati ranking whatever he tries. Kind of strange! You see the January rating in the last column. This time I have introduced a column with the number of Backlinks according to Technorati to enable finetuning a bit. It also helps to decide quickly to keep a blog in the list or not.

A horror Job
The whole operation is a kind of Horror Job. Therefore Halloween seemed an apt day to finish it and publish it.
First I collect the data in a Quattro Pro spreadsheet and match them with their corresponding Technorati ranking. The rating is put in manually. Then i cut and paste the spreadsheet into an HTM format. I copy and paste that into my Dreamweaver editor. In dreamweaver I can sort. If I sort in my spreadsheets I lose my carefully collected links….An excel spreadsheet won’t do. If readers know of a simpler method. Please let me know!.

Alexa ranking better?
I have been trying to combine this in one list with the corresponding Alexa ranking. But after filling in an Alexa ranking for many blogs that have rankings in the millions manually, I decided to leave it out. I may, or may not try to set up a smaller Alexa ranking for the top 100 or top 50 Travel Blogs. The funny thing is that an Alexa ranking may take into account the fact that a blog in incorporated into a larger multichannel site or portal and gets the ranking from other stuff than from merely their blogging activity. So I’m not sure about that. So I’m not so sure about the Alexa ranking.

Possibly incomplete and with errors
The list may not be without errors. I have simply forgotten people. Don’t hesitate to point me to your findings. I deleted some 30 Blogs from the January list. They simply disappeared from the radar or were sadly abandoned. Some Bloggers closed simply because they are afraid to divulge too many trade secrets…..

Why so many?
My main reason for keeping it long and rich, is to give new starters a chance to get a bit of visibility and nudge to go on with their work. Blogging about travel is a tedious, long hours behind your computer and a difficult-to-maintain job. It definitely doesn’t bring you a lot of money, but if you are passionate about it, like I am and a lot of fellow Bloggers are, you will be rewarded with a slowly, but gradually growing network of fellow travel bloggers. It can bring you a lot of fun. Also the Bloggers on this list can give you a lot of inspiration how to do things. Therefor, with pleasure I present now 300 Travel Bloggers, the longest list to date:
